Idaho State University is a public university, operated by the state of Idaho, with the main campus located in Pocatello, which is the county seat and the largest city of Bannock County, in the US state of Idaho, as well as the 4th largest city in the state, with a population estimated at a number of more than 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. According to Forbes magazine, Pocatello is 20th among `Best Small Places for Business and Careers`.
Idaho State University traces its roots back in March, 1901, when the Academy of Idaho was established, thanks to Governor Frank W. Hunt, who signed Senate Bill 53, which made it possible. The Academy was officially opened in Pocatello in May, 1901, by 1910, the enrollment reaching nearly 300 students. After being renamed, several times over the years, since it first opened its doors, the current name was finally adopted in 1963, in order to better reflect its new status as the state’s 2nd 4-year public university.
Today, ISU offers its approximately 14 000 students, more than 280 educational programs, through 7 different colleges, in various fields of study, including physical sciences, performing and visual arts, engineering and technology. Having an enrollment of more than 14 000 students (2009), ISU is the 2nd largest major university in the state of Idaho.
The athletic teams from Idaho State are known as the Idaho State University Bengals, who compete in the NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) Big Sky Conference, in various sports, including in track and field, basketball and boxing. The Bengals have experienced victory many times in the past years, including in 1981, when they won the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in football.
The list of notable ISU alumni contains resonant names such as Don Aslett - author, speaker and founder of Varsity Contractors Inc., Jeff Cook - former NBA player, Stacy Dragila - 2000 Olympic gold medalist, women’s pole vault, James A. McClure - former U.S. Senator, Ed Sanders - Boxer, 1952 Olympic gold medalist, William Petersen - actor, star of CSI: Las Vegas, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
